The east coast exudes an altogether different vibe. As the region has not yet been fully commercialised from a tourist perspective, it largely retains its own authentic character. The beaches are pristine and still frequented more by fishermen than tourists. There are quite a few spectacular Hindu temples too. Unlike the largely Sinhalese west, the east is more of a melting pot of Muslims and Tamils. Some of the most endearing places in the east are Passekudah, Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Batticaloa, Nilaveli and Kuchchaveli to name a few.

The Passekudah Beach was among the most developed tourist destinations in the blissful pre-war years of the 1970s and the early 80s. Today, it’s on its way back with a vengeance – many ambitious resort projects are underway. The clean safe waters make it an ideal family destination.

Trincomalee, the capital of the east, is full of character. Its deep-water harbour is amongst Asia’s finest and tourists who venture this far, usually head to the serene beachside hamlets of Uppuveli...
